| Shire Business Meeting (at Low
Ravenspur) |
| A large number of people showed for the February
business meeting. Teresa and I accidentally showed very, very
early and spoke with Melisande and Pooky some. Others soon
trickled and then flooded into the house. The big news of the
evening, was that Rhiryd of Storvik has stolen our penciled-in
date for "Fire in the Shire". It now appears that
the Shire will not host an event this year, despite all the
planning by Chon and the hopes of our archers. We also learned
the how very expensive it is to rent University of Maryland
at Shady Grove classrooms should the shire wish to host a University.
Grainne the New mentioned multiple times her wish to begin
an A&S fabric arts night at her home. Teresa became the
new Deputy Exchequer for Helena. (Chon,
Melisande, Michael, Aelfwynn, Violante, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar,
Grainne [the New] and [Husband], Grainne, Timothy,
Helena, Teresa and me). |

| Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at
Chon's) |
| A typical A&S night at Chon's. Everyone painted,
callig'd, and bemoaned the fact that in the near future Chon's
place would not be avaliable for Scribal Night. Teresa and
I are wondering whether our place will be suitable and whether
the kind gentlefolk of the shire are truly deserving of the
leg-punishing enthusiasm of a beagle's joy. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa,
and me). |

| The usual (small) crowd. Chon worked on his vine-work;
Gwenhwyvar worked on her calligraphy; Tereas and I worked on
our respective painting. Toward the night's end, Chon produced
glasses of blueberry wine, which met with our approval. We
spoke briefly about the upcoming autumn shire event and a suggestion
of the name "Fire in the Shire" was met with some
mirth. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa,

| Kingdom Twelfth Night (at Foxchase
Manor) |
| This event was very fun. There wasn't much in
the way of fighting (except for a side-sword and katana demonstration)
and no archery, but the A&S displays were good, the royal
court was entertaining, and the feast (prepared by House Longbow)
was great. Gregor showed me how to play cribbage. Edonea won
the Spike contest after much soliciting for macaroni. Miguel
was presented with an Opal for his woodworking skills. Margaret
was presented with an Award of Arms. Their royal majesties,
Janos and Rachel had a scroll ready for every recipient, which
was a nice change. I think we might be persuaded to attend
another Twelfth Night in the future. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar (absent
due to kitchen duties), Ignacio, Miguel and Violante, Mika, Timothy and
[Barbara], Ryryd and
Anna, Edonea, Vittorio,

| Shire Business Meeting (at Chon's) |
| Many, many people showed-up and crammed themselves
into Chon's living room to see who would become the next shire
seneschal, as well as who might step-up to various other vacant
offices. Rebekkah officially announced that she would be leaving
for Bright Hills within the month, and so Grainne [the New]
offered to take-over with Chon as her deputy A&S officer.
No-one seemed willing to take the Minister of the List position.
Finally, Melisande offered to take-over for Gyrth (and subsequently
the acting seneschal Istvan) as shire seneschal, providing
it didn't conflict with her other SCA duties. Of other note,
Vittorio introduced himself to the group at this, his first
business meeting. (Chon,
Melisande, Aelfwynn, Violante,
Grainne [the New] and [Husband], Grainne, Helena, Androu, Rebekkah,
Elizabeth (with whom I spoke of things long buried), Istvan
and Elizabetha with [Son], Vittorio, Teresa and me). |

| Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at
Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park) |
| A small number of archers braved the cold this
morning to shoot at a cardboard squirrel, rabbit, and a few
Royal Rounds. If not for my bowstring continually smacking
against the sleeve of my coat, I might have shot respectably
(for me), but alas it was not meant to be. Teresa and I left
practice a little early to mitigate the effects of hypothermia.

| Another small turn-out, but at least people turned
out. We arrived a little late. The evening was significant
for me, because for the first time since I started "Scribble
Night" I have begun to paint out of my illustrations.
I wish I could say more than that, but there isn't much to
it at the moment. Gewnhwyvar calig'd some Christmas cards.
Teresa finished a project. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa,

| Armoring Workshop (at William
the Younger's) |
| The cold holiday-season afternoon kept people
away from the monthly armoring workshop today. Those that did
show squeezed into William's crowded workspace, admired his
new toys, and busily worked on their various projects. William
spent most of the day helping me fashion an Atlantian thug-strap
for my helmet (which I believe is different than how Miguel
had described the same device). Randulf worked on aluminum
splints for his legs. Edonea worked on a fletching rig, a leather
pouch, and my chin piece. At one point, some of us had to go
to the store to get more supplies. (William
the Younger, Edonea, Randulf,

in what has become a dismal year, shooting a 52 in the final
round we stayed for. Gregge said he would look over the bow
Miguel handed me at the Newcomers' Meeting last week. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar,

| Another day at the Barony of Stierbach's Holiday
Faire. Timothy and I arrived early in the morning to
help Earl Mika construct the many archery targets he had planned
for the day's tournament. Before things began, he sat with
me, Timothy, and another marshal-in-training and went over
some of his philosophies for what makes a good and entertaining
tournament. I visited the Shrewwood merchant
and purchased a raven-carved drinking horn before the tournament.
During the tournament, I ran the line for the Marksmen class,
which included Edonea, Alina, and Barre. Teresa and Vittorio
arrived separately and spent the day shopping. Last year's
Holiday Faire had been Vittorio's first event. Today's event
was my first as a registered member of the SCA. At the day's
end Earl Mika signed-off on my marshallate papers. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar,

despite the funeral of Gyrth
Oldcastle earlier in the day. Violante explained
some details about the upcoming Twelfth Night, what to expect,
what to wear, what to bring, and how to keep ourselves occupied
during the day. Later, she showed us a dress she was working
on for the event, which was in its fourth incarnation. Miguel
spoke some about Gulf Wars, crossbows, and Atlantia's need
for war practices. At the evening's end Miguel donated his
old bow for use as a loaner bow for Shire archery practices.

it was possible. Gwenhwyvar worked on her calligraphy. I kept
busy drawing a fantasy character on a large piece of bristol

start working on something for real. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa,

| A Sheep's Tale (at Isaac Walton
League) - Photos Coming |
| It ended-up being a beautiful day for the event.
I can't comment on most of the day's happenings because I spent
the entire day helping Gregge as an Archery Marshal-in-Training.
Teresa spent most of the day helping at Troll. On the archery
ranges we had serveal royal rounds, a walking shoot, a wolf
and sheep shoot with a fox that ran back and forth, a gourd
on a vertical string shoot, and a clout-ish series of moving
shoots. Gwenhwyvar's feast was very good, as was Chon's
mead (as always). At day's end Earl Mika asked me to be a Marshal-in-Training
for Holiday Faire which could complete my training to be an
archery marshal. And what would a Scottish event be without
a cart-riding Groundskeeper Willie?! (Aelfwynn and

| Marietta Medieval Faire (at Marietta
Mansion) |
| Instead of travelling to the far Northern reaches
of Atlantia, we visited a local non-SCA event with medieval
living history encampments and a demonstration of the Battle
of Hastings. At one camp we were shown medieval arrows
with sewn fletchings, bodkin points, and a 150# D-shape longbow
no-one could string. At another camp we were shown dried fruits
and seeds that vikings might have taken on voyages. At another
camp we inspected a suit of 15th century gothic plate armor.
The day's highlight was an amusing recreation of the Battle
of Hastings with Saxons complaining their shields were smaller
than the Normans' and Harold getting the inevitable arrow in
the eye. (Teresa and me,

| A handful of people gathered at Chon's to work on our pre-gold-leafing scrolls. I spent all evening trying to freehand a letter "B" while others inked and painted. In two more meetings we will begin gold-leafing. There were fewer people present than at the last meeting. Failenn informed me that the Web Minister position was given to a new volunteer at the Business Meeting we missed on Tuesday. (Chon, Failenn, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me). |

| A good turn-out of people for the first of two instructional scribal nights, wherein Failenn teaches gold-leafing. In this first meeting people looked through many books to find a piece of illumination they would like to leaf. I did not get much done as the book I wanted to use was being used by someone else! (Chon, Failenn, Gwenhwyvar, Helena, Teresa and me). |

| Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park) |
| A cold and windy morning at the range was "enjoyed" by the largest turn-out I have ever seen; about twenty-two archers divided into two groups. I continued my poor showing for this year while Teresa her best Royal Round to date. At the morning's end Siegfried handed out archery medallions to those shirefolk without Barony ties, i.e. Mark McGroyne, Teresa, me and others. Attendance may have swelled due to Gregge and Gwenhwyvar's BBQ afterward. I think ate too many of Jen-Cookies. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ryryd and Anna, Timothy, Mark McGroyne, [Nancy], Margaret, William and [Rachel], Failenn and Eoghan and sons, Aelfwynn, Siegfried (of Crossbows by Siegfried), Collum, Teresa and me and several others). |

| Good attendance. Gwenhwyvar and Marlin worked on calligraphy while Failenn, Teresa and Chon painted. I spent the evening browsing through books on illumination. Chon gave us some mead! that he's been making for the last two years. Can't wait to try that! Late in the evening the idea was put forward to learn gold-leafing. Failenn offered to show people how it's done and considered posting the idea to the Roxbury Mill mailing list with the caveat that those interested should come and make a poster first. Finally, I made a fancy "H" from one of Failenn's books and called it an evening. (all listed). |

| The second nice Sunday of the year (see January 4th) and it being Leap Day didn't help my shooting at all! I was terrible! So many people showed that we had to divide the group into two different targets. I didn't lose any points this Sunday but realized that many of my arrows need straightening. Still need to practice long-distance shooting as well. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ryryd and Anna, Ignacio, Timothy, Mark McGroyne, [Nancy], William and daughters, Gauss and [Graham], Teresa and me). |

| A small in-garb potluck gathering at Violante & Miguel's home. The idea is to socialize without stepping out of period conversation. Thankfully, no efforts were made at horrible accents. Regardless, most of us failed miserably with references to web sites, movies and rock bands. The night consisted of gossip and a brief discussion regarding events where others weren't interested in period conversation and how to deal with that. All-in-all a good evening, but we endeavor to do better next time. (Miguel and Violante with [Jessica], Grainne, Teresa and me.) |

In two Royal Rounds, I was unable to get out of the low 40s. Newcomer Timothy did very well and [Marlin] is showing great improvement with his luminescent orange painted arrows. Teresa did some finishing painting on a King's Award of Excellence promissory. Failenn worked on her Greyhound Christmas painting. Gwenhwyvar practiced her calligraphy. Chon worked more on his four ladies scroll. Much tea and hot chocolate were consumed. (all listed). |

| Received letter this day from the Golden Dolphin Herald, Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane. The letter explained that my submission of name and device was being forwarded to the College of Arms for registration and was included on the Golden Dolphin's Letter of Intent. Ruling on these submissions are to be made in May. My blazon submitted to Laurel was "Per pale sable and gules, two ravens respectant argent". My submitted name was modified from Æþelwine of Aldgythleah to the more proper Old English approximation of Æþelwine of Ealdgythesleage. Details of the January 2004 submission are included here. |

Following the step-down of Mika and Ursula, I became involved in Lady Honora's Assassins' Tournament and was able to kill two others (including Eoghan and a child) I was killed in turn by Ivan on my way to dispatch Nigel. (Ivan killed me while I was speaking with Lady Catriona). There was a huge turn-out for both rapier and heavy weapon fighting. There was also archery, but I did not go out to see it as it was bitterly cold outside. During Court, we witnessed the formation of the Canton of Avannaniar. At feast we sat with Eoghan and Failenn (and children), Willow, Ignacio and Malyn. Markland |
College Park, Maryland |
| Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia
(at University of Maryland, College Park) |
| Membership in Markland consisted of frequenting
the Student Union office between classes, evening fyrdmoots
and building butted-chainmail using two pliers, a pair of snippers
and endless rolls of 12-gauge wire (which I still have because
the hauberk was never finished). During this "before
time" I was given the name Aylwin, which is a form of Adeluin,
which is a form of Æþelwine (see above).
The name was picked at random from a box lid of cardboard
tiles for a Battle of Hastings strategy wargame. |
