Shire Business Meeting (at Low Ravenspur)
A large number of people showed for the February business meeting. Teresa and I accidentally showed very, very early and spoke with Melisande and Pooky some. Others soon trickled and then flooded into the house. The big news of the evening, was that Rhiryd of Storvik has stolen our penciled-in date for "Fire in the Shire". It now appears that the Shire will not host an event this year, despite all the planning by Chon and the hopes of our archers. We also learned the how very expensive it is to rent University of Maryland at Shady Grove classrooms should the shire wish to host a University. Grainne the New mentioned multiple times her wish to begin an A&S fabric arts night at her home. Teresa became the new Deputy Exchequer for Helena. (Chon, Melisande, Michael, Aelfwynn, Violante, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Grainne [the New] and [Husband], Grainne, Timothy, Helena, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A typical A&S night at Chon's. Everyone painted, callig'd, and bemoaned the fact that in the near future Chon's place would not be avaliable for Scribal Night. Teresa and I are wondering whether our place will be suitable and whether the kind gentlefolk of the shire are truly deserving of the leg-punishing enthusiasm of a beagle's joy. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa, and me).

Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
The usual (small) crowd. Chon worked on his vine-work; Gwenhwyvar worked on her calligraphy; Tereas and I worked on our respective painting. Toward the night's end, Chon produced glasses of blueberry wine, which met with our approval. We spoke briefly about the upcoming autumn shire event and a suggestion of the name "Fire in the Shire" was met with some mirth. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa, and me).

Kingdom Twelfth Night (at Foxchase Manor)
This event was very fun. There wasn't much in the way of fighting (except for a side-sword and katana demonstration) and no archery, but the A&S displays were good, the royal court was entertaining, and the feast (prepared by House Longbow) was great. Gregor showed me how to play cribbage. Edonea won the Spike contest after much soliciting for macaroni. Miguel was presented with an Opal for his woodworking skills. Margaret was presented with an Award of Arms. Their royal majesties, Janos and Rachel had a scroll ready for every recipient, which was a nice change. I think we might be persuaded to attend another Twelfth Night in the future. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar (absent due to kitchen duties), Ignacio, Miguel and Violante, Mika, Timothy and [Barbara], Ryryd and Anna, Edonea, Vittorio, Gregor and Beatrix, Teresa and me, and many, many others).

Shire Business Meeting (at Chon's)
Many, many people showed-up and crammed themselves into Chon's living room to see who would become the next shire seneschal, as well as who might step-up to various other vacant offices. Rebekkah officially announced that she would be leaving for Bright Hills within the month, and so Grainne [the New] offered to take-over with Chon as her deputy A&S officer. No-one seemed willing to take the Minister of the List position. Finally, Melisande offered to take-over for Gyrth (and subsequently the acting seneschal Istvan) as shire seneschal, providing it didn't conflict with her other SCA duties. Of other note, Vittorio introduced himself to the group at this, his first business meeting. (Chon, Melisande, Aelfwynn, Violante, Grainne [the New] and [Husband], Grainne, Helena, Androu, Rebekkah, Elizabeth (with whom I spoke of things long buried), Istvan and Elizabetha with [Son], Vittorio, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A small number of archers braved the cold this morning to shoot at a cardboard squirrel, rabbit, and a few Royal Rounds. If not for my bowstring continually smacking against the sleeve of my coat, I might have shot respectably (for me), but alas it was not meant to be. Teresa and I left practice a little early to mitigate the effects of hypothermia. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Timothy, Edonea, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
Another small turn-out, but at least people turned out. We arrived a little late. The evening was significant for me, because for the first time since I started "Scribble Night" I have begun to paint out of my illustrations. I wish I could say more than that, but there isn't much to it at the moment. Gewnhwyvar calig'd some Christmas cards. Teresa finished a project. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa, and me).

Armoring Workshop (at William the Younger's)
The cold holiday-season afternoon kept people away from the monthly armoring workshop today. Those that did show squeezed into William's crowded workspace, admired his new toys, and busily worked on their various projects. William spent most of the day helping me fashion an Atlantian thug-strap for my helmet (which I believe is different than how Miguel had described the same device). Randulf worked on aluminum splints for his legs. Edonea worked on a fletching rig, a leather pouch, and my chin piece. At one point, some of us had to go to the store to get more supplies. (William the Younger, Edonea, Randulf, [Finn], and me).
21st of November 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Many archers turned out this morning for two or three Royal Rounds. I finally showed a small amount of improvement in what has become a dismal year, shooting a 52 in the final round we stayed for. Gregge said he would look over the bow Miguel handed me at the Newcomers' Meeting last week. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, [Heather], Timothy, Edonea, Miles, [Annie], William the Younger, [Nancy], Teresa and me).
20th of November 2004 Stierbach Manassas, Virginia
Holiday Faire (at Prince William County Fairgrounds)
Another day at the Barony of Stierbach's Holiday Faire.  Timothy and I arrived early in the morning to help Earl Mika construct the many archery targets he had planned for the day's tournament. Before things began, he sat with me, Timothy, and another marshal-in-training and went over some of his philosophies for what makes a good and entertaining tournament. I visited the Shrewwood merchant and purchased a raven-carved drinking horn before the tournament. During the tournament, I ran the line for the Marksmen class, which included Edonea, Alina, and Barre. Teresa and Vittorio arrived separately and spent the day shopping. Last year's Holiday Faire had been Vittorio's first event. Today's event was my first as a registered member of the SCA. At the day's end Earl Mika signed-off on my marshallate papers. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ignacio, Miguel and Violante, Mika, Timothy, Ryryd and Anna, Edonea, Theodore, Vittorio, Teresa and me).
17th of November 2004 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Newcomers' Meeting (at Violante's)
A few attended this night's Newcomers' Meeting, despite the funeral of Gyrth Oldcastle earlier in the day.  Violante explained some details about the upcoming Twelfth Night, what to expect, what to wear, what to bring, and how to keep ourselves occupied during the day. Later, she showed us a dress she was working on for the event, which was in its fourth incarnation. Miguel spoke some about Gulf Wars, crossbows, and Atlantia's need for war practices. At the evening's end Miguel donated his old bow for use as a loaner bow for Shire archery practices. (Miguel and Violante, Grainne, Catilena, Teresa and me). [100]

Death of Gyrth Oldcastle of Ravenspur
Duke Gyrth Oldcastle, Seneschal for the Shire of Roxbury Mill died on this day. A sad day for the Shire and much of the Society. He is survived by Duchess Melisande de Belvoir and his son Michael Oldcastle.
11th of November 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A low-turnout meeting for people to work on their various projects. Teresa did some white-work, Chon worked on an old scroll that he's had some difficulty completing, I did some sketches. Not much to report other than we also taste-tested some recently racked meads that Chon and the Roxbury Mill Mongolian Academy of Mead have been brewing. (Chon, Teresa, and me).

Golden Dolphin Herald Letter (at home)
Received letter this day from the Golden Dolphin Herald, Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane.  The letter explained that my name and device has been approved by the College of Heralds of Atlantia and regsitered with the Laurel Office. My blazon is now officially "Per pale sable and gules, two ravens respectant argent".  My name is now officially Æthelwine of Ealdgythesleage.
28th of October 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A low-turnout, low-key, quiet meeting for people to work on their various projects. Teresa painted some background onto the old "L" promissory design, proving that it was possible. Gwenhwyvar worked on her calligraphy. I kept busy drawing a fantasy character on a large piece of bristol board. At the end Gwenhwyvar gave Teresa some cheese and cabbage leftovers from Saturday's event. Soon, I'm going to have to start working on something for real. (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa, and me).

A Sheep's Tale (at Isaac Walton League) - Photos Coming
It ended-up being a beautiful day for the event. I can't comment on most of the day's happenings because I spent the entire day helping Gregge as an Archery Marshal-in-Training. Teresa spent most of the day helping at Troll. On the archery ranges we had serveal royal rounds, a walking shoot, a wolf and sheep shoot with a fox that ran back and forth, a gourd on a vertical string shoot, and a clout-ish series of moving shoots. Gwenhwyvar's feast was very good, as was Chon's mead (as always). At day's end Earl Mika asked me to be a Marshal-in-Training for Holiday Faire which could complete my training to be an archery marshal. And what would a Scottish event be without a cart-riding Groundskeeper Willie?! (Aelfwynn and Sigurd, William the Younger with children, Edonea, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Timothy and [Barbara], Ignacio, Arinfriðr, Grainne, Helena, Miguel and Violante, Heather of Lochraven, Mika, Collum and Brianna, Mark McGroyne, Ryryd and Anna, Ullric and Ethelfreda, Dante, Robert, Cian, Vittorio with [Jenny], Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).

Set-Up for A Sheep's Tale (at Isaac Walton League)
Gathered on a very overcast and chilly evening to help Miguel and Violante set-up the Spanish Peacock pavillion and help Gregge and Gwenhwyvar move food and pots into the kitchen for tomorrow's event.  [Jessica] got a chance to meet Darwin the Beagle. We will meet again early tomorrow morning for the real set-up. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Helena, Aelfwynn with Heather of Lochraven, Miguel and Violante, Teresa and me, and various children).
19th of October 2004 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Sheep's Tale Planning Meeting (at Aelfwynn's)
We gathered at Aelfwynn's and there was much "sheep-making" using the little, stitched sheep that Aelfwynn, Teresa, and Gwenhwyvar have been making. There are about 110 sheep all told. Other than the occassional burnt fingers from the hot glue guns and my little pipe-cleaner wire sculptures, it was a productive little meeting. (Aelfwynn, Gwenhwyvar, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me). [95]
12th of October 2004 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting / Sheep's Tale Planning Meeting (at Aelfwynn's)
A small group gathered at Aelfwynn's to discuss Shire business and the upcoming Sheep's Tale event. We talked about final preparations for the event. Teresa talked about registration problems since Grainne would be out-of-town until four days before the event. I produced a cover for the event handout. Gwenhwyvar mentioned that Gregge has many interesting archery shoots lined-up. Aelfwynn confirmed that Miguel will be marshalling the heavy weapons fighting. (Aelfwynn, Gwenhwyvar, Mark McGroyne, Helena, Rebekkah, Timothy, Teresa and me).
10th of October 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A modest turn-out for a pleasant morning. I shot terribly with Timothy's loaner arrows until the last round (which still wasn't too good). I experimented with brace-height and bow-handling. Teresa shot her best royal round to date. Cian is sending me a URL for a Canadian merchant that makes medieval-fletched arrows. Timothy reported that he came in second on Saturday's Kingdom Crusades competition and that the Needwood group took 3 out of the top 5 places. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Mark McGroyne, Timothy, Cian and nephew [Mark], Teresa and me).
9th of October 2004 Midgard Glenn Dale, Maryland
Marietta Medieval Faire (at Marietta Mansion)
Instead of travelling to the far Northern reaches of Atlantia, we visited a local non-SCA event with medieval living history encampments and a demonstration of the Battle of Hastings.  At one camp we were shown medieval arrows with sewn fletchings, bodkin points, and a 150# D-shape longbow no-one could string. At another camp we were shown dried fruits and seeds that vikings might have taken on voyages. At another camp we inspected a suit of 15th century gothic plate armor. The day's highlight was an amusing recreation of the Battle of Hastings with Saxons complaining their shields were smaller than the Normans' and Harold getting the inevitable arrow in the eye. (Teresa and me, and some scattered kingdom folk)
5th of October 2004 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Sheep's Tale Planning Meeting (at Aelfwynn's)
A very small group gathered to talk about preparations for our upcoming event. Gwenhwyvar discussed the menu and the possible meaning of the word "Corance". Teresa talked about reservation logistics since Grainne is going on vacation. I offered to help Gregge as a Marshal-in-Training for the event and said I would work on the program illustration this weekend. (Aelfwynn, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me).
2nd of October 2004 Storvik College Park, Maryland
Atlantia University - Fall (at the Jimenez Building, University of Maryland at College Park)
Many gathered today in the foreign languages building for Atlantia University classes.  I took courses: "Target Archery Marshals Class" with Allen of Wolfhou, impromptu "Theoretical Beadmaking" with [Grace] (approved after-the-fact by an Excellency), "Making Target Archery Targets" with Mika Longbow, "How to be a Group Herald" with Eogan MacAilpein, and a two hour "Dances for the Beginning Dancer" with Elize da Nizza.  15 credits to go!  (William the Younger, Edonea, Timothy, Grifin, [Grace] and [Matthew], Ignacio, Grainne, Mark McGroyne, Anna, Gregor and Beatrix, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).
26th of September 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Timothy's loaned arrows proved adequate for the morning.  A fair number of people showed, including a couple I did not know.  Spent a while searching for arrows behind the "stream butt" without much luck.  Despite sub-par shooting, I did not break or lose any of Timothy's arrows, yet. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Chon, Timothy, Gregor, Ullrich, Ignacio, Miles, Teresa and me, and others). [90]
25th of September 2004 Shire of Sylvan Glen Hedgesville, West Virginia
Ninth Annual Siege of Glengary (at Camp Frame 4-H Campground)
The Needwood Forest Company of Archers made their first visit to another kingdom this day, venturing from the borders of Atlantia to neighboring Æthelmearc. A nice morning and sunny afternoon welcomed all who traveled to the mountain retreat.  I took part in the morning's archery contests, scoring just behind Timothy of Shaftesbury and somewhat distantly behind Theodore.  Teresa stitched some sheep tokens for our own event.  Gregor took part in the actual siege as a combat archer while William the Younger joined the fray. After a full day of shooting, shopping (feast gear box, dress, cloak, and tunic), eating and drinking Beatrix presented Gregor a birthday cake. (Aelfwynn, Baroness Johanna and Gauss, Timothy, Gregor and Beatrix, William the Younger, Joslin, Teresa and me, and other kingdom folk).
9th of September 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
And yet more illuminations!  Some of us just showed up to try the "very young" mead from Monday morning. Tasted like honey to me. Teresa worked on one of her unfinished illuminations.  [Crystal] tried unsuccessfully to get a poem she'd written to fit on a page. Gwenhwyvar copied some text to be used on a scroll she was working on.  I didn't do much of anything. (Chon, Beatrix, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa, and me).
7th of September 2004 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Sheep's Tale Planning Meeting (at Aelfwynn's)
A very small group gathered for an otherwise cancelled meeting. We talked briefly about the cover, the site, and Gwenhwyvar's plans for cooking.  (Aelfwynn, Gwenhwyvar, Mark McGroyne, Teresa, and me).
6th of September 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Mongolian Academy of Mead (at Chon's)
A small group gathered at Chon's meadery on Labor Day to learn how and help make honey wine!  The "class" took the better part of the morning.  We will see how it all turned-out in two years' time.  In attendance were (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Eoghan, Nancy, Teresa, and me).
15th of August 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A warm morning at the range.  Almost everyone is at Pennsic, so not many showed.  Chon marshalled well enough as he only had to contend with Teresa and me.  Gregor showed early on, but left following a bow malfunction.  Toward the morning's end Cian also showed in time for a final Royal Round.  I did not shoot too well, though had fun experimenting with shooting from one knee.  Teresa shot very well, scoring consistently around 40.  (Chon, Gregor, Cian, Teresa, and me). [85]
14th of August 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Needwood Forest Company of Archers Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
An unofficial practice convened by a few archers gathered to shoot before Hurricane Charley stormed-up from the South and washed us all away. (Chon, Gregor and Beatrix, Teresa, and me).
12th of July 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A small gathering at Chon's.  I was less-than-productive (actually I did nothing at all).  Teresa painted more of her project.  Gwenhwyvar stayed for a small while before leaving and preparing to return to Pennsic.  Beatrix worked on her calligraphy.  Chon served mead.  A fine rainy evening.  (Chon, Beatrix, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa, and me).
8th of August 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A pleasant morning at the range (even if we had to use the stream-side butt).  Cian let me borrow some arrows (I was down to four) and I promptly mis-fired one high and long into the evergreens and lodged another into the roof the target shed.  Timothy found it, quite a bit shorter than when it had been released. For the most part, I shot appallingly bad this morning.  Edonea shot very well (better than me).  (Chon, Timothy, Edonea, Gregor and Beatrix, Cian, Teresa and me).
1st of August 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Everyone and their dog (Cassie) showed up for this practice. It was a nice pre-Pennsic morning.  We split the crowd into two groups. I broke several arrows, leaving me with four.  Will need to repair some the arrows I have lying about at home.  (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Edonea, Gregor and Beatrix, Ryryd and Anna, Arinfriðr, Chon, Teresa, and me, and others too numerous to mention.).
18th of July 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A cool, overcast, and breezy morning.  I didn't shoot so well this morning (other than a 23 untimed 20 yd.). Some people were likely still at the Novice Tourney and unable to show.  We left after the first Royal Round having other things to do this day, and because Teresa's arm started to hurt again. (Gwenhwyvar, [Cassie] and Gregge, Chon, Timothy, Edonea, Alison, Teresa, and me).
17th of July 2004 Storvik Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Storvik Novice Tourney and War Practice (at Patuxent River Park) - Photos coming
Our second Storvik Novice Tourney was a very, very hot and hazy day in the backwaters of the barony. I believe this may have been the first Storvik event with equestrian activities, but we were across the path on the archery field for most of the day.  The outgoing Baronial Champion (Failenn) organized the shoot, and Eoghan marshalled it.  We used the targets we created weeks ago and I think people liked them.  After a day of shooting (and getting sunburnt) a number of us gathered by Ryryd and Anna's tent for some beer. (Aelfwynn and [Kayla], Eoghan and Failenn, Ryryd and Anna, Chon, Edonea, Timothy, Gregor and Beatrix, William the Younger, Teresa and me, and others).
13th of July 2004 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Gyrth and Melisande's)
A short meeting where Helena discussed new budgetary guidelines and Violante was volunteered for yet another "hat".  Aelfwynn spoke some about the upcoming Roxbury event "A Sheep's Tale" and Grainne showed a small sheep favor which could be given at the event (one of which I bounced off [Nikki]'s head).  (Gyrth and Melisande, Aelfwynn, Violante with [Nikki], Gregge, Grainne, Rebekkah, Helena, Timothy, Teresa, and me).
8th of July 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
Another small gathering at Chon's. Catriana was unable to attend.  I spent the evening inking a penciled "H" illumination I'd worked on at some point in the past (leading up to the gilding 'class').  Others painted and taste-tested Chon's cordials. Failenn forewent her own projects to answer Edonea and [Crystal]'s questions.  (Chon, Edonea, Beatrix, Failenn, Teresa, and me).
30th of May 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
An overcast and cool morning.  A mixed bag of shooting today.  I started poorly (shooting 0s at 30 and 40 in early Royal Rounds) but had a respectable finish (55).  Teresa shot better than me most of the morning.  Newcomer Edonea showed (shooting well at 10 and 20) and presented a basket of cheese, fruit, and nuts after the practice. (Gwenhwyvar with [Cassie], William, Timothy, Edonea, Teresa, and me).
15th of May 2004 Bright Hills Rocks, Maryland
Garb Wars: Siege of Orleans (at Rocks State Park, Rocks, Maryland)
Our second event this month (and tenth overall) took us day-tripping to Harford County. A very hot day in May.  Gwenhwyvar, Aelfwynn and team worked busily at hand-stitching a viking dress (they won the competition).  Teresa and I took part in the archery competition.  Among the novice archers Teresa came in second!  The hanging water bag shoot was fun. (Gwenhwyvar, Aelfwynn, Miguel and Violante with [Jessica], Drugo, Teresa, and me).
13th of April 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
The second of two instructional scribal nights, wherein Failenn continued our gold-leafing lessons. Failenn mixed the glue with some red paint and we set to brush-applying this to our promissories.  When that was done we began applying the very thin gold sheets and burnishing with a rounded stone and Glassine. My "B" has many details and so looks rather, rough.  Mine also suffers from using (mistakenly) two different tints of gold.  When I continue the project, I'll need to re-apply the glue.  Everyone else's projects looked very good.  (Chon, Failenn, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa, and me).
9th of May 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A sunny morning with a small group.  Gwenhwyvar left early.  I had one good practice round (22@20 untimed) and the rest of the morning was no good for me.  Talked briefly about Storvik beginning their own archery practices near Bowie at some point in the future. That might divide our current archery group significantly. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Aelfwynn, Chon, William, Teresa, and me).
8th of May 2004 Dun Carraig Waldorf, Maryland
Challenge of the Heart
Our second "Challenge of the Heart" event! We spent the very sunny day shooting arrows and watching the heavy fighters.  I ran out of arrows pretty quickly, so couldn't compete in the archery tournament.  It wouldn't have mattered any way with the likes of Reynard about.  A very good feast followed in th evening. (Teresa and me, Serena, [Werner], [Julian], [Dave], Galileo and others)
4th of May 2004 Roxbury Mill Damascus, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Daffyd's)
Drove out into the lovely Roxbury Mill countryside to the large house of Earl Daffyd.  The meeting was run by Gyrth Oldcastle and many people attended.  Aelfwynn spoke a bit about the Sheep's Tale event this October and the difficulties she'd been having secure a site.  It appears our event may be at the Issak Walton center again this year. Met newcomer/lurker Julian for first time.  Ate lots of Kittie Cookies.  (Chon, Gyrth, Melisande, Failenn, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, [Andrew], [Julian], Daffyd and wife, Helena, Teresa and me, and others).
25th of April 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Another lovely Sunday morning where I'm unable to shoot for $#@&! (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me, and others).
18th of April 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A lovely Sunday morning.  My shooting is a bit...off, however.  (Teresa and me, and others).
22nd of April 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A very small gathering at Chon's. Used this as an opportunity to finish drawings before the next meeting's gold leafing class. (Chon, Teresa and me).
11th of April 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Another cold and rainy morning.  Practice was cancelled and many regrouped at Gregge and Gwenhwyvar's for a birthday BBQ.  More Jen-Cookies and ice cream! (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Timothy, Mark McGroyne, [Claire], [Beth], Teresa and me).
8th of April 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A handful of people gathered at Chon's to work on our pre-gold-leafing scrolls.  I spent all evening trying to freehand a letter "B" while others inked and painted.  In two more meetings we will begin gold-leafing.  There were fewer people present than at the last meeting.  Failenn informed me that the Web Minister position was given to a new volunteer at the Business Meeting we missed on Tuesday. (Chon, Failenn, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me).
25th of March 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A good turn-out of people for the first of two instructional scribal nights, wherein Failenn teaches gold-leafing. In this first meeting people looked through many books to find a piece of illumination they would like to leaf.  I did not get much done as the book I wanted to use was being used by someone else!  (Chon, Failenn, Gwenhwyvar, Helena, Teresa and me).
14th of March 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A cold and windy morning at the range was "enjoyed" by the largest turn-out I have ever seen; about twenty-two archers divided into two groups.  I continued my poor showing for this year while Teresa her best Royal Round to date. At the morning's end Siegfried handed out archery medallions to those shirefolk without Barony ties, i.e. Mark McGroyne, Teresa, me and others.  Attendance may have swelled due to Gregge and Gwenhwyvar's BBQ afterward.  I think ate too many of Jen-Cookies.  (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ryryd and Anna, Timothy, Mark McGroyne, [Nancy], Margaret, William and [Rachel], Failenn and Eoghan and sons, Aelfwynn, Siegfried (of Crossbows by Siegfried), Collum, Teresa and me and several others).

Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
Good attendance.  Gwenhwyvar and Marlin worked on calligraphy while Failenn, Teresa and Chon painted.  I spent the evening browsing through books on illumination.  Chon gave us some mead! that he's been making for the last two years.  Can't wait to try that!  Late in the evening the idea was put forward to learn gold-leafing.  Failenn offered to show people how it's done and considered posting the idea to the Roxbury Mill mailing list with the caveat that those interested should come and make a poster first.  Finally, I made a fancy "H" from one of Failenn's books and called it an evening.  (all listed).

Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
We came, we shot, we left (poorly). Some mornings I would prefer scores not be kept. At least Timothy did well.  Many people showed but Gregge and Gwenhwyvar were elsewhere. (Ignacio, Ryryd, Chon, [Christian], William and [Jennifer] and [Rachel], Timothy, Teresa and me, and others).

Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
The second nice Sunday of the year (see January 4th) and it being Leap Day didn't help my shooting at all! I was terrible! So many people showed that we had to divide the group into two different targets. I didn't lose any points this Sunday but realized that many of my arrows need straightening. Still need to practice long-distance shooting as well. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ryryd and Anna, Ignacio, Timothy, Mark McGroyne, [Nancy], William and daughters, Gauss and [Graham], Teresa and me).

Period Night (at Violante & Miguel's)
A small in-garb potluck gathering at Violante & Miguel's home.  The idea is to socialize without stepping out of period conversation.  Thankfully, no efforts were made at horrible accents.  Regardless, most of us failed miserably with references to web sites, movies and rock bands.  The night consisted of gossip and a brief discussion regarding events where others weren't interested in period conversation and how to deal with that.  All-in-all a good evening, but we endeavor to do better next time. (Miguel and Violante with [Jessica], Grainne, Teresa and me.)
22nd of February 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
This morning was cold, muddy and geese-fouled.  Between cold hands, slapping the bowstring against my jacket sleeve, and little or no practice of late, the day was pretty much a bust.  In two Royal Rounds, I was unable to get out of the low 40s.  Newcomer Timothy did very well and [Marlin] is showing great improvement with his luminescent orange painted arrows. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ryryd, Timothy, Mark McGroyne, and me).
18th of February 2004 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Newcomers' Meeting (at Violante's)
Group met at Violante's to discuss personas.  Conversation ranged widely.  Teresa is showing interest in a Spanish persona that will allow her to use her real name in period.  Briefly discussed working on the Spanish Peacock web site. (Miguel and Violante with [Jessica], Timothy, [Christian], Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me.)
11th of February 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
A more modest gathering than the last meeting.  I began penciling the "S" dragon-letter drawing, which also happens to be the one I started originally, but I soon lost my direction and sat dumbly for a while.  Played a while with [Buster] the cat.  Teresa did some finishing painting on a King's Award of Excellence promissory.  Failenn worked on her Greyhound Christmas painting.  Gwenhwyvar practiced her calligraphy. Chon worked more on his four ladies scroll.  Much tea and hot chocolate were consumed.  (all listed).

Golden Dolphin Herald Letter (at home)
Received letter this day from the Golden Dolphin Herald, Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane.  The letter explained that my submission of name and device was being forwarded to the College of Arms for registration and was included on the Golden Dolphin's Letter of Intent.  Ruling on these submissions are to be made in May.  My blazon submitted to Laurel was "Per pale sable and gules, two ravens respectant argent".  My submitted name was modified from Æþelwine of Aldgythleah to the more proper Old English approximation of Æþelwine of Ealdgythesleage.  Details of the January 2004 submission are included here.
24th of January 2004 Stierbach Manassas, Virginia
Stierbach Baronial Investiture (at Prince William County Fairgrounds)
The investiture of Baron Colum and Baroness Briana was a full-day affair.  Following the step-down of Mika and Ursula, I became involved in Lady Honora's Assassins' Tournament and was able to kill two others (including Eoghan and a child) I was killed in turn by Ivan on my way to dispatch Nigel.  (Ivan killed me while I was speaking with Lady Catriona). There was a huge turn-out for both rapier and heavy weapon fighting.  There was also archery, but I did not go out to see it as it was bitterly cold outside.  During Court, we witnessed the formation of the Canton of Avannaniar.  At feast we sat with Eoghan and Failenn (and children), Willow, Ignacio and Malyn. (also attending were Pedro, Vlad, Miguel, Ragnar and Kyneburh, Mika and Ursula, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Aelfwynn and Sigurd with Kayla, and others).
22nd of January 2004 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal and A&S Night (at Chon's)
Many showed.  While most worked on illuminations and calligraphy, Aelfwynn discussed how to use local library sources, including Library of Congress indexing. Most importantly, we learned about the Big Red Books.  I finished inking my first illumination and Failenn snatched it up to scan.  (Chon, Failenn, Aelfwynn, Gwenhwyvar, Helena, Rebekkah, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me).
6th of January 2004 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Aspen Hill Library)
Very cold night.  Introductions were made around the table (many people showed for reason).  Gyrth spent time talking about mustering interest in A&S activities.  It was decided that A&S and Scribal nights might become one-in-the-same on some evenings.  After officer reports, Aelfwynn spoke at length on preparations for the Shire's autumn Scottish event.  Failenn spoke with me about helping with the Shire web site. (Gyrth and Melisande, Failenn, Aelfwynn and Kayla, Miguel and Violante with [Jessica], Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Grainne, Rebekkah, Helena, Timothy, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me, some transplants from An Tir and others).
4th of January 2004 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
An unseasonally warm and sunny (but muddy) morning.  [Tere] stayed home. I shot my best Royal Round to date with a 72 (including a 27 untimed round at 20 yards!). Everything else I shot was pathetic. The regular cast of suspects showed. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, William the Younger with [Jennifer] and [Rachel], Margaret, Chon and me).
3rd of January 2004 Storvik College Park, Maryland
Storvik Yule Revel (at St. Andrews Episcopal Church)
A low-key event within the stone church. Attended a class on Anglo-Saxon poetry by Telen the Well-Prepared. Teresa made a wondeful wooden spoon. [Brian] spent many hours talking with Baroness Johanna about tunics and stuff. [Kyle] worked on a small leather pouch. This was the second event for [Brian] and [Kyle]. Ryryd and Margaret received archeyr medallions. William the Younger became the Barony Knight Marshal with Finn becoming Warlord. During feast we talked at length with Grainne, Rachel and Lady Catriona (also attending were Pedro, Anna, [Sarah] and others).
28th of December 2003 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
Another cold morning for archery practice.  Despite a month without practice, I scored a respectable (for me) 63 pts. on my first Royal Round of the morning; securing my Bowman status for a few more months. [Rachel] enjoyed fetching arrows from the shed roof. Brief consideration was given to the idea of an Order of the Porcupine, to award arrow-catchers. (Ryryd, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, William the Younger with [Jennifer] and [Rachel], Margaret, Timothy, Teresa, and me).
14th of December 2003 Storvik Takoma Park, DC
Barony of Storvik Business Meeting (at Gauss and Brenna's)
A well-attended and long meeting.  Baroness Johanna left early.  I attended the meeting, to meet with Pedro regarding my SCA name resubmission.  My initial submission and check had been lost at some point following it being sent to Gorm of Berra (in July).  Despite being in a foreign land, there were many familiar faces.  Talked with Pedro briefly about Deputy Herald duties.  (Johanna, Gauss, Brenna, Arbogast, Serena, Ysabel, Tirzah, Ryryd and Anna de Brabant, William the Younger, Pedro and me).
11th of December 2003 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal Night (at Chon's)
A smallish turn-out. I finally finished the penciling of my first scroll illumination.  Next "scribal night" I will have to start inking so that Failenn can make a master line copy of the piece. Teresa worked more on a promissory note. (Chon, Teresa and me).
2nd of December 2003 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland
Shire Business Meeting (at Twinbrook Library)
A low-key meeting headed by acting-seneschal Gyrth.  After a quick round-the-table of introductions, Aelfwynn spoke at length about an upcoming Scottish event she hopes to autocrat in October 2004 (hopefully entitled "A Sheep's Tale"?).  This was Timothy's first meeting.  I offered to help Failenn with some of her web duties.  (Gyrth and Melisande, Failenn, Aelfwynn and Kayla, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Grainne, Rebekkah, Helena, Timothy, Teresa and me).
30th of November 2003 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A cold morning for archery practice.  If this continues it will soon be too cold to continue Sunday practices until the Spring.  I shot well (for me) for the first two Royal Rounds (57 and 59) with a 29 pt. timed round that made me feel better about the day in general.  Teresa shot her best Royal Round ever. (Ryryd, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me).
23rd of November 2003 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A moderately good morning (great weather) at archery practice.  Gregge and Gwenhwyvar were unable to stick-around.  The highlight of the morning was Ryryd shooting an 86 royal round (a personal best for him). (Margaret, Ryryd, Mark McGroyne, Teresa and me).
22nd of November 2003 Stierbach Manassas, Virginia
Holiday Faire (at Prince William County Fairgrounds)
Spent the day at the Barony of Stierbach's Holiday Faire.  Saw many merchants and met the people at Red Falcon Armouries.  Watched the heavy weapons fighting.  Failenn entered [Murphy] and [Bailey] for hounds coursing.  Purchased a heavy penannular brooch, Teresa bought some trim.  This was the first event for [Brian] and [Kyle].  (Eoghan, Failenn, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ignacio <autocrat>, Miguel and Violante, Mika, Ragnarr, [Brian], [Kyle], Teresa and me).
23th of October 2003 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal Night (at Chon's)
Worked briefly on my illumination but decided I should get my own pencils and eraser before continuing so sat back and bothered everyone else at the table instead of working.  Teresa started a new promissory note.  (Chon, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me).
19th of October 2003 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A nice fall morning at the range.  I did not shoot so well, but Teresa went up a rank. [Kyle] and [Brian] stopped by to see what practice was about and [Brian] shot a Royal Round with my bow, but his score wasn't counted since he will be an East Kingdomer.  (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ignacio, Nikolai, Teresa and me, [Brian] and [Kyle]).
25th of September 2003 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal Night (at Chon's)

24th of September 2003 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Fight Practice (at Stedwick Elementary School)
A nice evening, but it's getting dark even quicker.  I got there after Istvan so had second pickings of the loaner armor, which is fine. I got to fight with Istvan a bit and then with Miguel for a bit more. Following practice we talked with Dafyd a bit about alternate techniques. (William, Miguel and Violante, Istvan, Dafyd, Mieszco and me).
21th of September 2003 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A pleasant morning with a small turn-out.  I didn't shoot terribly well but Teresa shot another 40 and is one away from going up a rank.  We tried some 30 and 40 yard timed rounds while Gregge did an ICAC.  (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Ryryd, Teresa and me, and another).
14th of September 2003 Roxbury Mill Derwood, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A drizzly morning for an archery practice but a good turn-out just the same.  After three pairs of practice rounds I shot my best "timed round" ever, shooting 29 pts. with eight arrows (all blue or better).  That 65 pt. round moved me from Marksman to Bowman!  The following Royal Round, I returned to more expected shooting levels. (Eoghan and Failenn, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Margaret, Teresa and me).
11th of September 2003 Roxbury Mill Silver Spring, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Scribal Night (at Chon's)
We went to our first re-scheduled Scribal Night bearing wine. Everyone sat around the dining room table working on their separate projects. I continued work on [Tere]'s illumination while she worked on a Promissory. (Chon, Failenn, Gwenhwyvar, Teresa and me).
10th of September 2003 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Fight Practice (at Stedwick Elementary School)
A nice evening, but it's getting dark quickly these days .  By the time I got the practice field I had time to struggle into the armor and fight for a time with Miguel. Miguel showed me how to some combinations. Soon it was dark and time to go home. Four showed for the shire's first rapier practice. (William, Miguel, Roland, Ruaidhri, Tascious, me and other shirefolk).

Atlantia Fall Coronation of Ragnarr and Kyneburh (at Camp Highroad *music alert*) - Photos
We arrived after dark on Friday evening, after watching a log get jammed under the boat at White's Ferry. After unloading the jeep and setting-up our lodge room, we sat around the feast hall for a while before turning in. Saturday morning we attended the last court of Logan and Isabel followed by the crowning of Ragnarr and Kyneburh. Following court we ate lunch and spent the rest of the day at Ignacio's archery tournament which included swinging dragons, advancing man and other novelty shoots. Following evening court we partook of a wonderful above-the-salt feast prepared by House Longbow which included salmon, game hens with helmets and lances, pork and venison. That same night we sat around the Bardic Circle and listened to Ruaidhri and others tell stories and sing. We left Sunday morning. All-in-all, Roxbury Mill was well represented. (Darius Aurelius Serpentius of the East Kingdom, Lord Ii Saburou Katsumoru, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Eoghan and Failenn, Istvan and Elisabetha, Collum, Chon, Theodora, Miguel, Teresa and me, and many Kingdom folk).
2nd of September 2003 Roxbury Mill Rockville, Maryland

A well-attended meeting saw the signing over of Seneschal duties from Istvan to Gyrth.  Several unfamiliar faces circled the table including both newcomers and shirefolk I did not know.  Failenn brought paper and pencil and many of us tried our hands at illuminations for promissories. (Gyrth, Melisande, Helena, Gregge and Gwenhwyvar, Failenn, Chon, Aelfwynn, Rebekkah, [Ema], Giovanna, Teresa and me).

Pennsic Pity Party (at Istvan's)
Istvan held a party for all those shirefolk unable to make it to Pennsic this year. A good number of people showed to help themselves to the keg of stout, [Robert]'s meads, chocolate, steak and chicken kabobs, and many appetizers. Word from Pennsic was that they were enduring two weeks of alternating high heat and heavy rains. (Istvan, [Amy], [Damian] and [Melissa], [Bill], [Robert], [Renee], [Heather] and [Sarah], Miguel and Violante with [Jessica], [Kitten], Aethelwulf, Teresa and me and other shirefolk).

At day's end, Baroness Johanna von Sudeborn awarded me a hide of red leather for winning the archery competition (38pts).  The scores were close: Margaret (37pts), [Nancy] (34pts), Teresa (31pts). (Eoghan and Failenn, Margaret, Mika, Teresa and me, Pedro, Yaakov, Aelfwynn, Grainne, Roland, William, Tascious and other folk).

I arrived a little late. Pleasant morning. Smallish turn out.  First practice with my new bow. Lost five arrow tips in the target but Gregge says he can fix them before the novice tourney. Scored my first 40. Two more of those and I'll be a Marksman! (Gregge, Margaret, Chon, Teresa and me).

Another hot and sunny, humid morning for Royal Rounds.  Another big turn out.  Failenn let me use her bow the entire morning which helped my averages tremendously.  Gwenhwyvar said my bow should be here any day now!  I got to use my new "Arrows by Gregge", which were very nice.  My high score (I believe) is now 32. (Gwenhwyvar , [Cassie] and Gregge, Eoghan, Failenn, Margaret, Ryryd and family, Chon, Teresa and me).

Roxbury Mill Archery Practice (at Needwood Lake, Rock Creek Regional Park)
A hot, sunny and humid morning for Royal Rounds.  We started on a beginner target (I do much better at 10 yards!).  Overall, a big turn out.  Failenn let me use her bow (35# Hunter) for the last few rounds, a kindness which much improved my accuracy.  Soon I will have my own bow, and then I will have no more excuses.  My high score is now 19. (Gregge and Gwenhwyvar with [Cassie], Eoghan and Failenn, Margaret, Ryryd, Chon, Teresa and me).
25th of June 2003 Roxbury Mill Gaithersburg, Maryland
Roxbury Mill Fight Practice (at Stedwick Elementary School)
Today it was 96°F in the shade.  I dragged myself to practice expecting others to give-up on it this evening, but everyone suited-up to play.  Let's not let a little Heat Stroke get in the way of a good time!! Aelfwynn and child even showed as spectators.  William the Younger helped me quite a bit but all-in-all no-one accomplished much. (William the Younger, Miguel, Roland, Henry, Tascious, me, and Aelfwynn).

Circa 1986-1988 Markland College Park, Maryland
Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia (at University of Maryland, College Park)
Membership in Markland consisted of frequenting the Student Union office between classes, evening fyrdmoots and building butted-chainmail using two pliers, a pair of snippers and endless rolls of 12-gauge wire (which I still have because the hauberk was never finished).  During this "before time" I was given the name Aylwin, which is a form of Adeluin, which is a form of Æþelwine (see above).  The name was picked at random from a box lid of cardboard tiles for a Battle of Hastings strategy wargame.
