Nancy Elizabeth "Lizzie" GILLIAM was born circa Aug 1871 in Virginia. She was the daughter of Lucinda (--?--) GILLIAM. Her father's name is not known. To date I have found several mentions of a GILLIAMs that might be Lizzie.

Born circa 1872, the search for Nancy Elizabeth GILLIAM begins in the 1880 Censuses.

Daughter of Drurey Senter Gilliam?

The 1880 Virginia Soundex lists a Nancy E. GILLIAM in the family of Drurey S. GILLIAM as follows:

There were many other GILLIAMs in the Soundex but none that were married to Lucindas (except for one black family) and none (except as listed above) with a Nancy E. as child.

Nancy E. GILLIAM mentioned above appears again in the 1900 Wise County Virginia Census (Robinson Magisterial District), still listed in the household of her father, below:

The Lizzie that is the subject of this research appears concurrently married to Noah L. STANLEY in the 1900 Dickenson County Virginia Census. Nancy E. GILLIAM daughter of Drurey Senter GILLIAM is therefore an unlikely candidate.

Daughter of William M. Gilliam?

Another Nancy E. GILLIAM appears in the household of William M. GILLIAM (1852-1909), son of Ira and Nancy (SKEEN) GILLIAM, and his wife Orah D. ROBERSON (1854-1925), daughter of John and Nancy (--?--) ROBERSON. They appear in the 1880 Wise County Virginia Census (Robinson Magisterial District) as follows:

I have not found further information on this Nancy E. GILLIAM, so I do not know where she was in 1900.

Daughter of Isaac and Lucinda Gilliam?

I received an e-mail on 2 Sep 1998 from Joy Miller who had found this website and is descendant from Geneva GILLIAM, who married John H. ROSE. She postulated that Lizzie GILLIAM might be a sister to Geneva GILLIAM whose parents she lists as Isaac and Lucinda GILLIAM. I have not found Isaac and Lucinda GILLIAM in the census records but may be looking in the wrong place. Supporting Mrs. Miller's guess, Naomi and Bennie STANLEY also mentioned that Geneva GILLIAM's father was named Isaac, but couldn't provide me with her mother's name.

Joy Miller claims to have a copy of Geneva's Certificate of Death as well which should list her parents, and possibly Lizzie's (if they're sisters).

What is Known About Lizzie Gilliam?

Lizzie GILLIAM married Noah L. STANLEY, son of Floyd STANLEY and Bettie MULLINS, on 11 Jul 1891 in Dickenson Co, Virginia. They had two known children; Felix and Rosey Belle. I have found little information beyond the 1900 Dickenson County Federal Census where she appears with husband Noah and their two children as living in the "Kenady Magisterial District".

Lizzie (GILLIAM) STANLEY's next appearance is on her daughter's marriage license (dated 11 Jan 1908) where she is listed as Lizzie WALLEN, with father "NOT STATED".

On 9 Jul 1996 I spoke with Jerry Gilliam who is compiling a book on the GILLIAM Family. He searched through several databases and found the following information which I have not followed-up on to this time. He has record of a Lizzie GILLIAM, born circa 1874 in Norton, Wise Co., Virginia. She married a William P. WALLEN (b. cir 1865) on 21 Aug 1902. She also died in Norton, Wise Co., Virginia.

Any information on the people mentioned above would be appreciated.
