Goldsborough Collection

The Goldsborough Collection at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore City has genealogical correspondence concerning many different families of the area. Included in the collection are several letters and notes detailing fragments of the LECOMPTE family. Although the material does not cite sources, the information is contemporary with the families mentioned. One letter was of great interest to me:

January 10, 1894

Edward Lloyd LeCompte (Now residing at S.W. corner of Courtland & Pleasant street - oyster dealer - residence [--?--] 1033 South Street.

He was the son of James Lloyd LeCompte, born in Cambridge, Dorchester County, married on _____ day of _____ Emily Dawson, daughter of _____ Dawson of Talbot Co. in Trappe District. James Lloyd LeCompte (son of _____ Dawson who lived in Dorchester County at place called Jack-town or Bucktown about 5 or 6 miles from an public leading to Airey's Meeting House.

James Lloyd LeCompte, Thomas LeCompte, Peter LeCompte, [and] Wm. LeCompte were brothers & lived in Dochester County

I do not know how Lloyd LECOMPTE fits into the LECOMPTE family of Eastern Shore Maryland. The fact that he was born in Cambridge, Dorchester County is a very good indication that he is descendant from Antoine LECOMPTE and Hester DOTTANTE; the original LECOMPTE immigrants to come to that region. Fortunately, the note also names Lloyd's brothers which should make finding the appropriate family much easier.

James Versus Joseph LeCompte

Until 17 Aug 1996, I was under the impression that the name James Lloyd LECOMPTE was accurate, and had been searching for James L. LECOMPTEs that might fit the bill. On this Saturday however, I visited for the first time, the grave of Jos. Lloyd LECOMPTE and Emily DAWSON LECOMPTE.

 Jos. Lloyd LeCompte

      1806-1859

Emily Dawson LeCompte

      1820-1890

Due to the exactness of the dates listed on the grave marker, the names themselves, and the relative proximity to their children's graves, it was easy to see that the people are the same. The only difference is the first name, Jos. (or Joseph) rather than James (or Jas.). The gravestone at the site looks new. It may have been rendered to replace a much older stone as many tombstones at Mount Olivet Cemetery have been worn unreadable. It may also have been replaced at the time of Emily's death, some 30 years following her husband. During this supposed replacement (assuming an original stone existed), the worn letters of "Jas." could have easily have been transcribed as "Jos.".

A Registry of Administrations Granted in Baltimore City, on record at the Maryland State Archives, lists one James L. LECOMPTE as having died intestate during the time in question. The letters of administration were granted on 19 Dec 1865 to Emily LECOMPTE and Humphrey B. KNIGHT. The estate was settled on 2 Feb 1866. Despite the similiarity of names it is difficult to positively identify the people involved with the intestate settlement. No date of death is given. Emily's maiden name is not included. No ages are presented. I favor the gravestone's information since these factors are present on the stone, thereby securing the identities, if not names of the research subjects. I cannot however, gauge the accuracy of the information carved in the stone, as less than the information gathered from the second-hand Goldsborough Collection letter (see above). For these reasons, I am listing Lloyd's fullname as Joseph Lloyd LECOMPTE, though searching for more evidence to support or discredit either find. I hope to find some Baltimore City newspaper articles concerning the death of Lloyd LECOMPTE that may tip the scale one way or another.

The Family of Joseph Lloyd LeCompte

Joseph Lloyd LECOMPTE appears with his family in the 1850 Baltimore City Maryland Census in Ward 15, p40, household 497, family 667. The family was enumerated on 27 Jul 1850. The household entry looks like this:

LeCompte, Lloyd 44 Male Sailor Maryland

LeCompte, Emily 29 Female Maryland

LeCompte, Elizabeth A. 11 Female Maryland

LeCompte, Margaret J. 8 Female Maryland

LeCompte, James H. 6 Male Maryland

LeCompte, Laura V. 4 Female Maryland

LeCompte, Edward L. 2 Male Maryland

LeCompte, George T. 4/12 Male Maryland

I was unable to find this family again in the 1860 Federal Census. What I did find was a similar family back on the Eastern Shore. There is no Lloyd LECOMPTE listed because according to his gravestone found at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland, Jos. Lloyd LECOMPTE died in 1859. The family that I did find appears in the 1860 Talbot County Maryland Census in the Trappe District, p152, household 1087, family 1111. The family was enumerated on 6 Sep 1860. The household entry looks like this:

Emily LeCompte 41 Female 1100 / 200 Maryland

James LeCompte 16 Male Maryland

Lina LeCompte 14 Female Maryland

Edward LeCompte 12 Male Maryland

George LeCompte 10 Male Maryland

Sarah LeCompte 8 Female Maryland

Lewis LeCompte 6 Male Maryland

Humphrey LeCompte 3 Male Maryland

Mary LeCompte 1 Female Maryland

The discrepancy/similarities between the two familes are as follows:

  • Emily (LECOMPTE), the "mother", appears in both but has aged 12 years between Censuses
  • Elizabeth and Margaret do not appear in the 1860 household, but being females of 21 and 18 respectively it is not unreasonable to believe that they are married or employed elsewhere
  • James's extended age matches exactly
  • Lina could be mistranslated or a version of Laura or the name V.; the extended age of this daughter matches exactly
  • Edward's extended age matches exactly
  • George's extended age matches exactly; this makes the last four children sequentially identical to the household of the previous Census, with all ages matching
  • Sarah, Lewis, Humphrey, and Mary are too young to have appeared in the 1850 Census

The household could be living in Talbot county to be nearer her DAWSON family, as there is not a concentration of LECOMPTEs in that area. No more has been found on the DAWSON family so this theory can not confirmed at this time.

Emily (DAWSON) LECOMPTE has been found in no later Censuses. According to her gravestone, now shared with her husband, Emily Dawson LECOMPTE died in 1890. She should appear in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses.
