The Prouse Family
Very little is known about the family of Caroline Prouse.
Although records in the United States spell the surname "Prouse",
the correct spelling is probably "Prause" or "Praus". "Prouse" is
not a common name in Germany/Austria, but Prause (or Praus) is. A
search of the Family History Center's International Genealogical
Index and the Ancestral File turn up NO instances of the family
name Prouse in Germany or Austria. However, families with the
spelling Praus or Prause are numerous.
Caroline PROUSE was also called Anna in some records. She was
born 21 May 1844 at Neiderlipka, Bohemia and married Johannes KATZER in 1868 at Bohemia (now
Czechoslovakia). She died 2 May 1906 near Greeley, in Anderson Co.,
Kansas, when the buggy in which she was riding was hit by a train.
She was 61 years old. Her daughter, Bertha, was with her in the
buggy and narrowly escaped injury. Killed with Caroline was the
local Catholic priest, Father TUMP. Caroline was buried 4 May 1906
at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Greeley, Anderson Co., Kansas.
Caroline had two sisters who also lived in Anderson County,
Magdelena ZENTNER of Greeley and Josephine SEIFERT of Scipio. She
also had at least one brother, named Joseph.
Josephine was born in 1845. She married Seifert (--?--). In
1897, the SIEFERTSs and their five grown children immigrated from
Lipko, Moravia in the empire of Austria to the United States. In
July of 1897, they moved to Greeley. Josephine died in 1930 and is
buried in Greeley, Anderson Co., Kansas.
Magdelena was born May 1836 at Grulich, Austria-Hungary. She
married Seigfreid ZENTNER. She died 22 Nov 1919 at her home in
Greeley, Anderson Co., Kansas, at age 83 and was buried in St.
John's Cemetery in Greeley.
