STOMP


John Peter STOMP was also known as "Big John". He married Mary DIDIER. They had several children, but only two are known:

  1. Maria, (aka Sister Mary Alphonse); b. 15 Jan 1849 at Bour, Luxembourg; baptized 15 Jan 1849. She entered the United States in 1871 at New York where she and her brother parted company. She joined the order of the Sisters of the Holy Cross and entered the convent at St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception, Notre Dame, Indiana. She received her habit the 15th of August, 1875. She died 18 Aug 1908 at South Bend, St. Joseph, Indiana, at age 59; She was buried at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Mary's, on Aug 19, 1908 (there is also a memorial marker for her in Holy Angels Cemetery in Garnett)
  2. John Peter

John Peter STOMP, son of John Peter STOMP and Maria DIDIER, was born 28 Jul 1850 at Bour, Luxembourg. He left home to avoid the Kaiser's Army and fled to France where he spent three years as an apprentice stone mason. He worked on the fort at Metz, France after the Prussian War in 1871. He again had to avoid the Kaiser's Army after the defeat of France. He, his sister Maria, and three other men slipped out of France and went to Belgium and caught a boat for the United States. Their crossing took six weeks and they finally landed in New York in 1871. John first went to Dubuque, Iowa where he worked for awhile. He then moved to Ottawa, Kansas in 1875 and to Garnett, Kansas in 1881. He married Catherine Margaret WASSMER, daughter of Leopold WASSMER and Margaret KOETTING, 25 Oct 1883 in a Catholic church he had helped build (St. Boniface) at Scipio, Anderson Co., Kansas. He became a naturalized citizen in 1888. He worked as a stone mason and built many buildings in Anderson County. John Peter STOMP and Catherine Margaret WASSMER had the following children:

  2. Joseph John, b. 3 Jul 1886 at Garnett, Kansas; m. Jennie PLAIN, daughter of Peter PLAIN and Barbara KOMES, 25 Oct 1911 at Holy Angels Catholic in Church, Garnett, Kansas; d. 15 Aug 1918 at Garnett at age 32; bur. in Holy Angels Cemetery, Garnett
  3. Helena Margaret, b. 28 Apr 1888 at Garnett, d. 24 Nov 1974 at age 86. She never married.
  4. Hubert Michael b. 26 Jul 1890 at Garnett; m. Ruby (--?--); d. 1975 at Sacramento, California
  5. Charles William, b. Jun 1892 at Garnett; m. Mabel E. BIGALOW, daughter of Austin R. BIGALOW and Edna Margaret HAY, 15 Nov 1916 at Garnett; d. 1951 in Anderson Co., Kansas; bur. in Garnett Cemetery, Garnett
  6. John Louis, b. 29 Aug 1894 at Garnett; m. Lillian JOHNSON 25 Oct 1911 at Garnett; d. 4 Mar 1939 at Wilsonville, Furnas Co., Nebraska, at age 44; bur. in Holy Angels Cemetery, Garnett. He was railroad station agent on the Chicago, Burlington & Rock Island RR
  7. George Aloysius, b. 12 Aug 1896 at Garnett, Kansas; m. Elizabeth Dimples TOMKIES, daughter of John TOMKIES and Olive Ora BROWN, 2 Feb 1918 at Tulsa, Oklahoma; m. Doris E. MARKLEY 12 Aug 1939 at Iola, Allen, Kansas; d. 7 Oct 1988 at Mercy Hospital, Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas, at age 92; bur. 10 Oct 1988 at Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas
  8. Eugene August

John Peter STOMP died 7 Feb 1923 of pneumonia and flu at his home in Garnett, Anderson Co., Kansas, at age 72. He is buried at Holy Angels Cemetery in Garnett.

Eugene August STOMP, son of John Peter, was born 20 Oct 1900 at Garnett, Anderson Co., Kansas. He married Anna Caroline KATZER, daughter of Ferdinand KATZER and Anna EGIDY, on 1 May 1923 at St. John's Catholic Church, Greeley, Anderson Co., Kansas. Eugene August STOMP died 25 Mar 1984 at Wichita, Sedgewick Co., Kansas, at age 83.

Eugene August STOMP and Anna Caroline KATZER were my grandparents. They had seven daughters.
